SDH for content that has been dubbed should use the dubbed audio or dubbing script as the basis and ensure that the two match as much as reading speed and timings allow.

While most of our NOLA SDH come with an accompanying dub, there are edge cases where we order non-original SDH without a dub. In these cases, linguists are expected to author the SDH using subtitles as the reference. Unfortunately, we don’t have a clear signal for linguists regarding which source of resource should be used. While we are working with our engineering team on a long term solution, here are some interim steps linguists can take to ensure they use the same reference when authoring NOLA SDH.

Check if an SDH has a corresponding dub: check the language option in media play to see if a dubbed audio is available.

Use sub as a source of reference in SDH authoring: choose the corresponding subtitle in the source column. Select source events and choose “clone source events” action in the “more actions” menu to clone them over to the target column. You can Shift click to select multiple events at once.

Tip: the cloned events may take a second to show up. Try scrolling up/down and the cloned events should populate correctly.
