The below guide walks through error categories to help Loc QC-ers prioritise and understand
their impact on viewing experience.

1. Error Category: Offensive Language

Category Description: Offensive language that will have a very negative impact on the Netflix brand and is detrimental to the entire viewing experience.

Originator Error Code: TRANSLATION OBJECTIVE

Issue Description: Offensive towards race, religion or nation, LGBTQ+ community and gender or profanity not appropriate for a given language or cultural context - CRITICAL.

2. Error Category: Mistranslation or Missing translation

Category Description: The target text does not represent the source text intentions.

Originator Error Code: TRANSLATION OBJECTIVEMISSING TRANSLATION

Issue Description: A mistranslation or missing text that changes understanding of the plot and leads to wrong assumptions - CRITICAL or MAJOR

3. Error Category: Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation

Category Description: Incorrect spelling of words, including typos, capitalization and transliteration. Incorrect according to the syntax and morphology of the target.

Originator Error Code: TRANSLATION SGP

Issue Description: Incorrect according to the spelling and grammar rules of the target language - MAJOR. The text is unreadable, difficult to follow or has an awkward and unnatural structure. Wrongly applied punctuation that changes the meaning of a sentence - MAJOR.

4. Error Category: Style and Formality

Category Description: Unidiomatic or related to formality, fluency and stylistic conventions of the target language.

Originator Error Code: TRANSLATION OBJECTIVE | TRANSLATION SUBJECTIVE

Issue Description: The target doesn’t read as an originally written text and is visibly awkward - MAJOR, otherwise minor or subjective and should be used responsibly.

5. Error Category: Terminology & Consistency, including culture or specific reference

Category Description: A term (domain-specific word) is translated with a term other than the one expected for the domain or otherwise specified/The term chosen is not applied consistently.

Originator Error Code: KNP CONSISTENCY | TRANSLATION CONSISTENCY | SHOW GUIDE CONSISTENCY

Issue Description: All names and key phrases designated in the KNPs as well as any specific terminology that is needed in the story being told (such as medical terms in a hospital drama) or Inappropriate culturally-specific reference - MAJOR.

6. Error Category: Line breaks, placement and redundant events

Category Description: Related to splitting text and subtitling events.

Originator Error Code: FORMATTING LINE BREAK | FORMATTING POSITIONING | REDUNDANT EVENT

Issue Description: Text is split in two lines or two subtitles in a non grammatical way which makes reading difficult. The subtitle is in the wrong part of the screen, causing subtitles to overlap with on-screen text or important graphic information - MAJOR. Subtitle is redundant - MINOR.

7. Error Category: Language Specific Netflix Timed Text Style Guide

Category Description: Related to subtitling conventions in the target language.

Originator Error Code: FORMATTING TEXT STYLE | TRANSLATION SGP

Issue Description: Fails to comply with the target language TTSG - MAJOR.

8. Error Category: Reading speed

Category Description: Related to the timing of subtitle events. Usually adjusted by text editing, splitting or merging subtitles.

Originator Error Code: READING SPEED TRANSLATION | READING SPEED TIMING

Issue Description: The timing of the subtitle does not allow for comfortable reading and understanding of the text - MAJOR.

9. Error Category: Timed Text Style Guide Violations

Category Description: Related to timing to audio, timing to shot change and general timing rules.

Issue Description: Most of the major issues should be addressed during the template creation. Any adjustments to the timing during the QC process is considered minor.
