DTT Loc QC-ers are trusted subtitling professional responsible for the final quality of timed text files. We expect Loc QC-ers to have a profound understanding of the source language, including idioms and jargon, and an excellent knowledge of grammar, spelling and punctuation of the target language, of which Loc QC-ers are proficient to a native level. Loc QC-ers must have high cultural awareness and extensive understanding of terminological/cultural nuances deepened by ongoing engagement with the living language. To be part of the trusted DTT Loc QC pool Loc QC-ers need to have solid subtitling experience with an excellent knowledge of subtitling conventions, e.g. timing, condensing, rephrasing, being aware of reading speed and character limits. DTT Loc QC-ers are expected to demonstrate an acute awareness of the impact of subtitles on the audience’s enjoyment of the content and support Netflix in providing the best local experience to our members around the world.

General requirements

  • Native speaker of the target language. An excellent knowledge of grammar, spelling and punctuation and ongoing engagement with the living language. Cultural sensitivity and extensive understanding of terminological/cultural nuances.

  • Proven record of working in a translation field for at least seven years and subtitling for a three year minimum. 

  • Proven record of subtitle proofreading skills based on former projects.

  • Profound understanding of the source language, including idioms and jargon. 

  • A sound knowledge of subtitling conventions and best practices, e.g. condensing, rephrasing, being aware of reading speed + character limits. Ability to adhere to Netflix Timed Text Style Guides and meticulous attention to detail. 

  • A sound knowledge of a subtitling software, e.g. EZTitles, Spot, WinCaps, Netflix Originator.

  • Must be capable and competent in creating and amending timing of subtitles. 

  • Proactive and self-sufficient. Actively researching terms and content as well as Netflix-provided instructions, guidelines, and best practices. Escalate questions and issues when necessary. Exercise good judgment in ambiguous situations.

  • Excitement and awareness about the impact of subtitles on the audience’s enjoyment of the content.

  • Previous experience in large scale linguistic and quality evaluation programs a plus. 

Task specific requirements

  • Must deliver assets that are free of errors, in particular:

    • Objective translation errors, i.e. incorrect, inconsistent, unidiomatic, or unnatural translations, mistranslations, literal or otherwise incorrect translations for the context, word choice that would not be used or understood by a native speaker, and words or phrases that are offensive to a local viewer or damaging to the Netflix brand

    • Missing translations

    • Spelling, grammar or punctuation errors

    • Key Names and Phrases (KNP) and show guide inconsistencies

    • Formatting errors (line breaks, text style, positioning)

    • Redundant events

    • Netflix Timed Text Style Guide violations including

      • Reading speed 

      • Timing to shot change

      • Timing to audio 

    • Language-specific Netflix style guide violations

  • Must familiarise themselves with Netflix QC specific training covered in this Helpshift section.

  • Must apply Netflix error codes correctly.

  • Must ensure that the tone of the subtitles is suitable for the content and matches the artistic intent specified in the title show guide (if provided).

  • Must make sure that our Guidelines for Translating Sensitive Content are properly applied.

  • Must make sure that the subtitles comply with our Timed Text Style Guide: General Requirements and the relevant language-specific Timed Text Style Guides

  • Must be impartial and accept creative interpretations when they support the overall meaning and artistic intent and are contextually appropriate. Preferential, non-impactful changes to text or timing should be avoided.

  • Must conduct any arbitration discussions with translators in a professional manner and be open to feedback with the ultimate goal of improving the quality of the subtitles.
